Billy was a player.

I've discussed before that the phone call the Rausch's have long claimed came from Maura the day after she disappeared was just a Red Cross worker trying to help Bill get leave from the military. No calling card was used. But his distortions of the truth don't stop there.

There was something about Bill Rausch that Maura couldn't walk away from, even when she knew he was bad news bears, according to her aunt Janis.

"He cheated on her. Cheated on her with her sister Julie's friend as if that wouldn't get back to Maura. Then he'd buy her expensive jewelry. Maura was heartbroken. She came to me sobbing. I told her he wasn't worth it. But she always went back."

One detective went further. "He's a scumbag, the way he treated Maura. If she did go up there with the intention of committing suicide, it's because of the way he treated her."

Bill Rausch has not responded to requests for an interview.

  1. I have been following this case for several years and this is the first I´ve heard of Billy Rausch supposedly being a scoundrel.
If this is indeed correct Maura must have been absolutely heartbroken and would also give a completely different perspective to some of
    Maura´s actions.

  2. Very interesting. Don't get me wrong, many young men in their 20s can be heartless even toward girlfriends they love, so I'm not even sure this is *that* unusual, although it would help explain if Maura was emotional.

Also, 12:54 pm, this is likely the first you've heard of it because Sharon Rausch was always all over the message boards, and certainly no one could talk about her son with her around. I always thought it was strange how enmeshed she seemed in Maura's life, and later, in the case once Maura went missing.

    1. Sharon was always checking Maura's personal cell phone records because Billy paid for her phone. Why was Fred always at Amherst? I think Maura needed some space and just decided to go. Even her friends were busybodies, always thinking that Maura couldn't have any thoughts or opinions of her own.

  3. Keep up the good work. It would be so great if this mystery was finally solved!

  4. Interesting. I always wondered why his mom was doing all the interviews instead of him. Maybe this is why?

  5. LB, it's much more likely that his mom was doing "all" the interviews because he was in the army stationed at Ft. Sill, OK, and then later in Iraq (and actually Billy appears in several interviews over the years).

  6. Can you post some links to some of Billy's interviews? I'd like to read what he had to say.

  7. I alwyas found it odd that Billy could be so immersed in Obamah's campaign, and all the media attention that he could've gotten, yet he didn't use that opporunity to try to get more light shed on his missing girlfriend

  8. Do you have a link to Billy's immersion in the Obama campaign?

I remember Billy's mother setting off my hinky meter during her interviews on ID's "Disappeared." I'm still really not sure why . . . it may just be that I got the famewhore vibe of her possibly liking the attention a lil too much . . . or it may have been that it felt like she was inserting herself and talking a lil too much to perhaps, protect her son? She seemed to be bragging a lot of the time - especially about providing the cell phones (that whole deal was confusing to me btw.)

I think "player" was a good way to describe Billy, if the allegations are true . . . rather than harsher descriptive terms. Both were just basically kids trying out a serious relationship - a long distance one at that. I disagree with the detective who said Billy'd be the reason she killed herself . . . people that are suicidal find reasons to kill themselves regardless.

  9. While Billy was very involved in the Obama campaign at a local level (Central Ohio), he certainly didn't have the authority/pull/audacity to hijack a presidential campaign to try to "get more light shed on his missing girlfriend." I'm pretty sure the Campaign would have frowned on that. As far as him being a "player", show me a young man who isn't at some point. As I recall, there has been some speculation about Maura's extra-relationship activities from time to time as well. For a "detective" to state that if Maura committed suicide, it was because of Billy is unprofessional and ignorant.

  10. maybe he met billty at the accident scene and sized him up for himself. as for the all american girl image, that picture was painted many times. as a woman myself, i think the testing the waters for maura was more for revenge.

  11. It seems a bit perjorative to say that Billy "distorted the truth". I would imagine that he genuinely thoughts an perhaps pathetically hoped that it was her who called. And I don't buy it that Maura would put how with a playboy boyfriend. She could have swapped him out for anyone whenever se wanted I'm sure. I am not surprised Billy isn't responding toyou though. No one likes to be called names and I think you're forgetting tht this guy loved Maura even if they were only 21 and essentially kids. Both he and her family lost a loved one and being down on them for not talking to you somehow disrespects their grief.

  12. well, it appears that a few year after Billy's girlfriend dissapeared, his sister passed away. It must have been such a difficult time for their family. I hope they can all find peace, one day.
