More disturbing details about those emails...

A couple weeks ago, I received a very disturbing email from "clemens21@aol.com," which referred to Maura as a "white trash ho." The email was angrier than most and referenced torture of women. I forwarded the email to police and asked for help from a reader to track it back to the source. The best we were able to do was trace it to Northern New Jersey.

I've since received two more emails from him.

The emails are bizarre. In them he claims his name is Doug Olive. He also references Heart of Darkness and T.S. Eliot's The Waste Lands.

There's also this:

Time to edu-ma-cate all of those sycophants (including the oh so analytically-eloquent Mr. Green Jeans, JD-Harvard, Class of 1996).

I was then contacted by a professional escort from New Jersey who has also been receiving threatening messages from this same aol account. Here are a few snippets:

I was convicted of stalking and terrorizing Michelle Wirth.
U love the taste of Columbian cum lol like that other white trash whore Liz Exline.

Sending these along to the police, too. Does this guy sound familiar to anyone out there??

  4. Clemens21: if there actually is a John Green, JD Harvard-'96, leave him alone. The one you are interested in in John Green, JD University of Washington-'95.

Advice: before indulging your strange, "cast away from the ship of humanity" email binges of dire loneliness, do some research and check your assumptions (i.e., whaddaya know, there's more than one John Green with a law degree. Who'd'a thunk it?)

  6. Wait, is it clemens21? Or clemens21r? @aol.com? I think the previous post about this emailer it stated the later of the two.

  7. I agree with Anonymous 2:56. Why was that post pulled? Any discussion, however misguided and ESPECIALLY if proven misguided is a worthwhile contribution into the investigation. At least for rule-outs. The tone of this blog has changed and I'm very sad about that. I feel like John Green is being a bit beseiged by outside forces and I hate to see that as his intentions seem so good and the responses to comments are so timely. -- thank you John Green! WHY does this particular case bring out so many...forgive me...whackjobs? SpruceGoose, who are you? What f'ing difference in the world does it really matter if Maura is called a young lady?!?! Would you prefer young hooligan? Or college-aged credit card thief? Or neutral-gendered person of indeterminable age? PLEASE exactly give us guidance on exactly how we should properly refer to her since you have that magical insight of propriety that we all apparently lack. Or...just go grind your axe elsewhere like on Topix from which I presume you came? These emails are TRULY sinister and I hope LE gets all over this. Also, more random thoughts -- I always double space betweeen sentences as a product of early 90s typing class. Had no idea it's no longer considered "correct" until catching up on this blog. And finally, i think Franzia Wine Guy has a seriously valid point. As a pretty serious wine drinker, the amount she consumed versus dumped is VERY TELLING on multiple levels.

And ever so sorry to those I may offend with typo's. I'm on an iPad and I don't hunt and peck / text as well as I straight out type.

    1. I, too, continue to double-space between sentences; I think it makes written work easier to read.

I think words are powerful, Sharon, and that language matters. I can't equate "hooligan" and "credit card thief" (which are pejorative, rude, unproven and unkind as descriptors for Maura), or "neutral-gendered person of indeterminable age" (which is at best inaccurate, since we know Maura's gender and age, and at worst meaningless given those facts), with "woman," which is a precisely accurate noun to describe a female over the of 18. It neither insults nor flatters.

We think of people the way we hear them described. For more than a century, a black male of any age was called "boy." It was an insult. We are a society of easy labelers, and labels have a nasty habit of sticking and becoming confused with facts. In Maura's case, it isn't a matter of propriety but of accuracy and respect. This case could use more of both.

I am sorry you are so angry, and wish you more joy.

    2. Hi Sharon.

First, thanks for the sympathetic comments. And, hey, I am with you, chasing down clues to make what you can given what you know is useful even if later wrong. In fact, in this case, the analysis helped to bring other information into focus. I think the reason James took down the post is that he did not want to have trolls bombarding him with comments.

I also agree with you that there has been a slight tone change in the last week. I actually think that came from the admin who approves comments having been unable to do so for a week, right at the time that the "troll's excitement" of my Julie analysis being wrong hit. I think we can expect variations in participation and tone. We can't react to the trolls making some hay in the short term, because today as last week, the only thing that matters is talking about Maura's case. So, sometimes the best way to engage a troll on their own terms is to ignore them and keep talking about the case. I have had Congressman and CEOs pry down my throat with a crow bar over studies I led. The stupid comments are not even an annoyance in that respect. So I say lets you and me and everyone who cares stay on the case and - with me responding to every comment on this blog - the trolls will never leave something in the record that anyone with sense listens to.

But again, thanks. I got some interesting stuff coming up and look forward to your comments.

I don't think you are being honest with yourself John. Go back and Read your "Who is John Green" post (which for some reason has been removed from the blog)....That speaks volumes about how much posts about you that are critical/negative bother you. Offering to send people your CV and call them is just kooky talk.

The tone changed dramatically when you seem to bombard the blog with too many posts and posts that were too long. It's like an internet filibuster.

You seem sincere and well-meaning, but I think you've frustrated a lot of folks who are interested in this case and visit this blog.

    4. You are probably right Grover, I have let trolls whose aim is to derail the conversation or act out some weird psychological need bother me at times. But in general, it does not bother me and I have gradually learned to spot the small group of people who are behind it and ignore them.

As for your "tone" comment etc., it is not appropriate for posting here. If you fancy yourself a strategic advisor to James about how he should run his blog (recall, I am doing what he asked me to do) then email him about it. That you post it here really makes no sense. It suggests something less than sincere about your perspective. The fillibustering going on here is the wasted space NOT TALKING ABOUT MAURA's case, which you in your post are guilty of. Please post about the case. If you don't like the tenor of the conversation, contribute to it in substantive ways to improve it or offer your advice to James.

John Green you are one overly sensitive guy. Well meaning, but you a little over the edge with your reactions.

I was being sincere with what I thought, I don't know how you can judge me insincere from one short post.

    1. I have the same inkling and irritation SC. Reminds of Alden Olsen. I think, however, exposing him has value as a deterrent to people who aim to derail investigation (and public discourse's effective and accepted role in that process) into Maura's investigation. I also think until he is eliminated as material, he has to be sought after. While he may - and probably is - enjoying that process, I bet he wont enjoy its end. Note, for instance, that he TALKS about me in emails to Renner but would never DARE email me. The salient difference there is that Renner is a journalist and I am not. I guess that is getting a little cryptic, but if you want to know more SC, email me and I'll fill you in.

      Thanks for your comment.

    James & John,

I would just like to point out that in the two posts James has made about the disturbing emails he has posted two different email addresses. On the first post, he cited a "clemens21r@aol.com" and here the email is said to be "clemens21@aol.com" (notice the missing r). Whether this is simply a typo or the email accounts are different - therefore possibly from an imitator - I wouldn't begin to guess. But I thought it important to point this out.

    2. This woman's face looks similar to Maura, but I don't think it's her for a few reasons:

      1. She has a different body type than Maura. I know it's been 9 years, but her body type and running gait aren't similar to Maura's

      2. She is wearing a lot of clothes. Maura was a competitor. Competitors know that when they do a race they heat up quickly therefore underdress at the start knowing they'll be warm after a few minutes.

      3. This woman looks like she is enjoying the company of others and having fun (which is great!), but Maura would be more focused and in pain as she digs deep to pass people.

If you are looking for photos of Maura in a race, she'll likely appear in the top 3rd of the field, probably won't be looking at the camera, and be look like she is really pushing it.

Good stuff John. I figured it was a typo but if James had received emails from two different email addresses that could have rather large implications in my opinion. I can't seem to find any information about either address online so I'm glad you are on top of it. Look forward to reading what you come up with.
